Author and NYU Professor Hasia Diner to Speak at Temple Sholom
“We Remember with Reverence and Love” – American Jews and the Myth of Silence after the Holocaust: 1945-1962
Professor Hasia Diner will be at Temple Sholom on Tuesday, February 9th talking about her book “We Remember with Reverence and Love”, which dispels the myth that American Jews chose to be silent after the Holocaust about the mass murder of millions at the hands of the Nazis.
Diner sets out to refute what she contends is an accepted truth, that until the 1960’s, American Jewry suffered from a self-imposed collective amnesia about the Holocaust. Diner presents considerable evidence that not only were American Jews aware of the Holocaust but their culture was influenced by it, from newspapers to youth movements to speakers, etc… In fact, says Diner, the American raised $45 million in 1945 alone to succor survivors in Europe.
