Local Artist Ilse Gordon’s “Greenwich Revisited: One Hundred Summers Later ”

to appear at the Greenwich Historical Society from June 23 – August 11, 2010

An opening reception for the exhibition is planned for June 24 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., and Ms. Gordon will host an on-site gallery talk on July 11 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. All works featured in “Greenwich Revisited: One Hundred Summers Later” will be available for purchase.

If “Cheers” was filmed in a home-goods store instead of a bar, Mill Street Home would be the perfect setting. The owners are friendly, the neighborhood has that “small town” feel, and the place itself is a bit quirky. I’ve just cut and pasted an invitation to an art opening at Mill St. Home – so come on by, sip some wine and check out the store. Who knows. Norm might swing by.

On Friday November 6 at 7pm, head to the Greenwich Library Cole Auditorium for a reception (yes, with refreshments) celebrating the library’s unique art lending practice. As the daughter of an architect who loved modern art, I clearly remember our monthly “print-picking” forays to the Greenwich Library. We’d arrive with a piece that had been hanging temporarily on our living room wall, and walk out with another. It was a joyful family bonding time, creating a childhood informed by the greats in the world of art. The lending art collection, which began in 1965, has grown to 220 pieces ranging from lithographs to watercolors and acrylics and more.

The Greenwich Library celebrates this practice in a “Retrospective: 44 Years of Lending Art” which will coincide with the Friends Friday Films showing of Sketches of Frank Gehry.

Both the reception and film are FREE and open to the public.

The Flinn Gallery at Greenwich Library launches Wood Stone Metal: Contemporary Japanese Prints created by three different printmaking artists; Joshua Rome, Sarah Brayer and Yuji Hiratsuka. Each creates on a different material – ergo the name of the exhibition.

Hiratuska will lead a gallery tour on Friday, November 6 @2pm
Brayer and Rome will host an Artist Talk in the gallery on Saturday, November 7 @2pm

All events are FREE and open to the public.

“Horst On View” At Design Within Reach, 86 Greenwich Ave.: Free Reception Sunday, October 18th from Noon – 5PM

Horst’s fashion and portrait photography career spanned 60 years, and many of his black and white photographs are instantly recognizable. Design Within Reach hosts a showing of some of Horst’s greatest work from October 16 – November 6, with opening reception on Sunday October 18th from Noon – 5pm. While I wouldn’t say, exactly, that DWR is cheap, the store does appeal to lovers of modern and contemporary furniture design, with a comprehensive collection of the greats; and if/when anything goes on sale, I’ll be the first to write about it.
