A panel discussion led by Richard Dietsch, Sports Illustrated writer and editor, will be held with three retired Jewish major league players: Ron Blomberg, Art Shamsky and Elliot Maddox. The players will discuss their experiences of being Jewish and playing in the major league. Following the panel, there will be time for autographs, as well as a host of fan fest games like Speed Pitch, Virtual Baseball, Photo Magazine Covers, Bounce House and more. A Ballpark style dinner will be served. There will also be a sports memorabilia dealer on hand with items for sale, as well as a collection of Sandy Kofax memorabilia for viewing.

This event is co-sponsored by Bi-Cultural Day School, Fairfield County Connecticut Jewish Baseball League, Solomon Schechter of Westchester , Temple Sholom and Westchester Fairfield Hebrew Academy.

Tickets are $18 for adults, $10 for children (12 and under).

Congrats to future UPenn Student, Isabella Rolla and her brother, Michael for coming up with a great idea for a shop in Greenwich. This most horsey of towns has been without a tack store since probably forever. Back in the Dark Ages, when I rode at Round Hill Stables, I had to purchase my jodhpurs and riding hats at the Saddlery in Wilton. Apparently, that was still the case – until a few weeks ago. To add lots of icing to the cake, this enterprise is a DISCOUNT shop – the Riding Supply Outlet where everything is 50% off retail. I drove by today ( closed on Monday), but managed to peek inside and saw lots of blankets, crops, stirrups, and clothing. Kids shirts are $10, socks $7 and sturdy brushes $5 each. Unfortunately, this store will only be open until Saturday August 1st. Come Tuesday July 27-Saturday from 10am-6pm and stock up on your Fall riding needs. After that, presumably, Isabella’s got to pack up for school. 356 W. Putnam Ave.

Guess that dates me, but roller skating never gets outdated. And there’s just something about cruising around in a circle with like-minded co-ordinated people on a winter Friday night that makes those cold dark days a bit brighter.

Come to the Old Greenwich Civic Center, 90 Harding Rd. on Friday December 11; 6:30-9PM – and $5 will get you skate rentals and session time. What a deal.

The Roller Skating Program runs every Friday Night in January and February 2010. What a terrific way to get together with friends.

Fitness Edge Waives Start-Up Fee ($99) Through October 31

There really is something about working out in a group setting that sets the juices flowing. At least that’s what it did for me, when I walked into the Fitness Edge on 1333 East Putnam Ave. in Greenwich. It’s been awhile since I’ve gone to an actual gym, with rows of machines and lots of sweaty people, but I’m pretty sure that those machines and people were not clad in pink before.

What’s the deal? Well, Fitness Edge is running a special “Breast Cancer Awareness” into rate as well as a donation of a dime a mile for every mile you log on pink CYBEX treadmills throughout October.

A VIP Membership – with 2 comp training sessions, 1 comp Pilates session, use of machines, shower amenities, towel service, sauna and exercise programs – generally entails a $99 start up fee (with monthly dues of $59.95 or $69.95 depending on the number of months purchased). This will be waived – ZERO – through October 31st (monthly dues still apply); just call Lisa at 637-3906. As my inaugural post, this tidbit was too good to pass up; watching a polo match, driving a Range or Land Rover in Greenwich! Add a Lilly Pulitzer pallet and the stereotype is complete. But, actually, picnicking on polo grounds with kids and dogs happily running around is perfect for family bonding; watching The Sport of Kings doesn’t have to cost a king’s ransom. For the last Greenwich Polo Club match of the season, on Sunday September 13 – 2pm to 5pm – show up in a Land Rover and get in free (entry is $30 for everyone else). Plus, you are invited to light refreshments while checking out the new Land and Range Rovers in a VIP hospitality tent.
