Guess that dates me, but roller skating never gets outdated. And there’s just something about cruising around in a circle with like-minded co-ordinated people on a winter Friday night that makes those cold dark days a bit brighter.

Come to the Old Greenwich Civic Center, 90 Harding Rd. on Friday December 11; 6:30-9PM – and $5 will get you skate rentals and session time. What a deal.

The Roller Skating Program runs every Friday Night in January and February 2010. What a terrific way to get together with friends.

What can possibly get a teenager off the streets on dark Friday nights? Free pizza and Tim Burton.

They’ll have to travel a bit for this freebie – but if you’ve got a budding art or film buff on your hands (and want him or her OFF your hands for a few hours) – it’s so worth it.

The Fall 2009 – Winter 2010 MoMa Teen offerings include Free Pizza, Free creative events, Free Movies. EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT! Coming up, starting October 30, is the 1968 classic, George Romero’s Dawn of the Living Dead. Future events include Tim Burton’s Big Fish, Edward Scissorhands and a Burton “Sneak Peak.”

The season celebrates MoMa’s Tim Burton retrospective, and (from ad) “spotlights the mythical, incredible and often shocking characters and stories that artists create in film, performance and visual art.”

The Program runs Every Friday Night during the School Year at

First Come First Served (up to 120 teens for films, 60 for workshops) and no need to pre-register. (We all know how teens leave things till last minute).

Westport County Playhouse Free Events on “Community Day,” October 24th

Once again, I direct your attention to a venue beyond the Greenwich border; this time to the fantastically worthy Westport County Playhouse. With a Board of Directors that includes James Earl Jones, Christopher Plummer and Joanne Woodward, this is not your amateur regional theater, and in fact, I have vivid childhood memories of being introduced to the kiddie classics there, and doing the same for my own children.

October 24th promises to be an eye-opening day for those lucky enough to RESERVE FREE TICKETS at (203) 227-4177.

Workshops and events are broken up into Morning, Afternoon and Evening, running 10am – 10pm

Morning – 10:30am – 12:30pm – is geared, naturally, towards families and small children with storytelling, facepainting, backstage tours and books from the 2010 Family Festival Series.

Afternoon – 1pm – 4pm – events focus on teen activities with a Stage Combat workshop, tours of the theater, a chat with Tony Award winner Michael Yeargan, and a directing workshop with tick, tick, BOOM! director, Schott Schwartz – and much more.

Evening – 4pm – 9:30pm, for adults begins with a conversation with Artistic Director Mark Lamos about the 2010 season followed by a viewing of the Playhouse production of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town.

Teen Program Week at Greenwich Library; October 18-24 – Free Activities

What does it take to entice a Middle School-aged kid to get off of his/her butt? As a young friend of mine, who went on to a top college and marketing career, said when she was 14 years old, “I’m in Middle School. We’re supposed to just hang out all day!” There are themes, however – danger, gross-outs, magic (and lets not forget vampires)- that show some promise.

Greenwich Library offers these kinds of alternatives to “hanging out” during the Teen Read Week from October 18th-24th.

ALL PROGRAMS ARE FREE

On Sunday October 18th @ 2pm; Students in 5th grade and up can participate in the Olympian Trivia Show with Christopher Hurlbert.

Secrets, magic and danger come into play on Thurs. Oct 22 @ 4:30. Kids in the 6th-8th grade Book Club will read and talk about Skullduggery Pleasant, the dead detective. To register, pick up the book at the Children’s desk.

Sat. Oct. 24 @1pm; Middle School students are invited to carve their own designs in pumpkins. Refreshments will be served, too, and REGISTRATION is REQUIRED. Call 203-622-7915 or email mwalsh@greenwichlibrary.org.
