Perrot Memorial Library is pleased to feature Jennifer Jordan, who will be speaking about her latest book, The Last Man on the Mountain: The Death of an American Adventurer on K2. This will be Jennifer’s second visit to Perrot; she previously shared with us her 2005 book, Savage Summit: The True Stories of the First Five Women Who Climbed K2, the World’s Most Feared Mountain.

Local Artist Ilse Gordon’s “Greenwich Revisited: One Hundred Summers Later ”

Greenwich Historical Society to Host Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation Barn Survey Workshop – Thursday, January 20, 2011

In conjunction with the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation, the Greenwich Historical Society is inviting volunteers to take part in a survey of Greenwich and other lower Fairfield County barns. The Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation is looking for individuals to identify the location of barns and/or perform “windshield surveys” by taking a photograph and noting a barn’s address. The resulting information will be the foundation for a statewide historic resource inventory, and the basis for possible State Register and National Register of Historic Places nominations. The program is an important effort to document the dwindling inventory of these unique emblems of our agricultural and architectural heritage and has already resulted in the documentation of 6,300 barns throughout Connecticut. Similar programs have been implemented statewide with Fairfield and New Haven Counties and a few remaining areas scheduled throughout 2011.

The workshop will include a brief presentation on the history of barns in Connecticut and will teach volunteers how to categorize barns by type, use and construction technique. Volunteers will also be briefed on how to input the data they collect into the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation barn database.

The workshop will include digital photography tips and cover safety issues while surveying. Volunteers will receive a map of their designated area, a letter explaining the project to show to possibly wary barn owners, a booklet with pictures and vocabulary, and a tutorial on how to use the website.The workshop will be held at the Greenwich Historical Society’s Vanderbilt Education center from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
