Congrats to future UPenn Student, Isabella Rolla and her brother, Michael for coming up with a great idea for a shop in Greenwich. This most horsey of towns has been without a tack store since probably forever. Back in the Dark Ages, when I rode at Round Hill Stables, I had to purchase my jodhpurs and riding hats at the Saddlery in Wilton. Apparently, that was still the case – until a few weeks ago. To add lots of icing to the cake, this enterprise is a DISCOUNT shop – the Riding Supply Outlet where everything is 50% off retail. I drove by today ( closed on Monday), but managed to peek inside and saw lots of blankets, crops, stirrups, and clothing. Kids shirts are $10, socks $7 and sturdy brushes $5 each. Unfortunately, this store will only be open until Saturday August 1st. Come Tuesday July 27-Saturday from 10am-6pm and stock up on your Fall riding needs. After that, presumably, Isabella’s got to pack up for school. 356 W. Putnam Ave.
Take a Tromp Through the Swamp and a Break by the Lake with Tom Sieling. Tom returns to Greenwich Library following last summer’s wonderful show. His performances are VERY participatory, fun, lively and informative. Sieling writes and performs songs for children and adults and he accompanies himself on guitar, banjo, harmonica and a drum machine and all songs include parts for the whole family. The program is free and open to all ages. No tickets required. Doors open at 6:45 pm on Tuesday July 27th in the Cole Auditorium.
Another one from Greenwichblog.com:
Gunsmoke, the award winning country band, will be in concert on Wednesday, July 28, from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park. The rain date is the next day Thursday July 29.
Gunsmoke hails from Fairfield County and was formed in 1982. The New York Metro Country Music Association has named the band Band of the Year six years in a row. Gunsmoke plays new country hits from the likes of Garth Brooks, George Strait and Alan Jackson. They also draw from the many styles they were raised on like Bob Wills swing, son of the pioneer trail songs Ray Price shuffles, Buck Owens twang, and Eddie Arnold classics to provide the audience with a diversified night of music. Gunsmoke is the band that entertained for President Bush when he visited Greenwich.
Bring a picnic dinner, blanket and the family to enjoy a wonderful concert under the stars. This event is free and open to the public.
In an iconic building (the former Conde Nast Publishing House), our Hyatt Regency Greenwich has been hosting conferences, weddings, travelers and foodies since the 1980′s. If you have never seen the parklike interior (complete with mini-waterfalls and babbling brooks), it’s worth it just to stop in and stroll. And – as a bonus, the hotel is offering a chance to win meals, overnight accommodations, parties and other perks by just becoming aFan on Facebook. Full disclosure (and the reason I know about the contests), I provided the correct answer to a Facebook question and won Sunday brunch for two at the in-house restaurant, Winfields.
Just over the bridge from Byram, CT, Port Chester, NY features a cornucopia of ethnic eateries. If you categorize those from the Southern US as “ethnic” (and I do, being married to a Tennessee guy), Restaurant Q, with its great smoked ribs and chicken, corn bread and sweet tea, fits nicely among Columbian, Brazilian, Puerto Rican and other much more Southern places. You can sign up on Facebook or Twitter for their daily deals or take the kiddies on Wednesday for free meals.

Groupon.com is one of my favorite discount sites, but alas, it only covers establishments in major cities (New York being the closest). A new website,LocalGinger.com is filling the void with daily deals at local shops, salons and restaurants. Today (7-20-10), log on for a deep discount on a massage (you pay $70 for an hour-long $120 treatment) at a spa in New Canaan. Sign up and start getting great discounts in your email box.
Acupuncturist Kimberlie Wilson will discuss the principals of Chinese Medicine at this FREE seminar at the Center for Integrative Medicine, 35 River Rd., Cos Cob. ”The body has its own innate power and wisdom to maintain and improve health.” Registration required: (203) 863-3630
It’s the Town of Greenwich’s version of the wave: first, Old Greenwich stands up and puts end of season stuff on sale. Next, comes the Grandaddy of Sidewalk Sales – the Greenwich Ave. bonanza. Now, it’s Byram’s turn, and it seems as if everyone in this getting-cooler-by-the-month enclave is participating. Lolita Cocina and Tequila Bar, Cynthia’s, Fin and Feather, Firehouse Deli, Side Door, Salon O and more are slashing prices and offering promotions and deals. Thursday July 22 – Saturday July 24
